Ideally a BMI should be calculated using a pre-pregnancy weight. Maternal BMI is categorized by the World Health Organization (WHO) 4 as follows:

·         Underweight (BMI <18.5kg/m2)

·         Normal (BMI 18.5-24.99 kg/m2)

·         Overweight/pre-obese (BMI 25-29.99kg/m2)

·         Obese class 1 (BMI 30-34.99 kg/m2)

·         Obese class 2 (BMI 35-39.99 kg/m2)

·         Obese class 3 (BMI 40 kg/m2)
